Article for the Public

For the final main writing assignment, I focused on a portion of my literature review and adapted the writing for a public audience. In preparation for this paper, I identified Scientific American as my model journal. This publication would allow me to assume a certain level of scientific literacy from my audience, as well as a general curiosity in scientific discoveries. I narrowed my topic from mRNA vaccines to only mRNA vaccines as a treatment for cancer which would allow me to base my writing in a single, concise narrative. The process of writing this paper was a big shift for me as I found it difficult to explain scientific concepts without getting caught up in unnecessary details. This project forced me not only find the simplest way to convey ideas, but to keep them interesting and engaging for the reader. My first artifact is an early outline, that includes the frame of my ideas and a few paragraphs from the literature review that I would later adapt. My second artifact includes feedback from a peer review. This feedback highlighted what parts of the paper were important and helped me to choose the way I would present my writing in the final draft.
