Hey all!
Welcome to my Advanced Writing portfolio, in the following pages you will find the culmination of my writing through ENGW3307. Over the past semester, I have worked to improve my scientific writing for a variety of audiences. With the help of Dr. Metzger and my classmates, I completed three projects that each developed a unique style of writing. Each project included an extensive drafting process that allowed for me to make incremental progress on different skills as I approached each final draft.
I began the course looking at rhetorical analysis. I felt pretty comfortable with rhetoric, as this has been a common style of writing for me in English and foreign language classes going back through high school. However, I had not applied this same style of analysis to scientific writing. After reading assigned mentor texts including Watson and Crick’s discovery of DNA and an analysis on this article, I began to see how to transfer my rhetorical analysis knowledge to science. Scientific writing has a stigma of being dry, but I found that this lack of emotion made key phrases stick out.
